Cars have been banned within the villages for more than a decade. Sinuous paths traverse seemingly impregnable cliff sides, and a 19th-century railway line that's cut through a series of coastal tunnels moves people from village to village. Set amid some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the planet, these beautiful, colorful towns can bolster the most jaded of spirits. Tucked away in a particularly mountainous kink at the eastern end of the Italian Riviera, the villages of the Cinque Terre (pronounced chin-kwe ter-re, with a rolled "r" sound) were shaped by their profound isolation. However, if you have any concerns about your pregnancy, avoiding all hair colourants while trying to conceive and at least during the first trimester appears to be the safest option. The Italian Riviera is not short of rugged coastline or romantic towns and villages, but the five fishing communities of the Cinque Terre are its most iconic highlight. The results from the experiments Lush has undertaken with animal-free testing lab XCellR8 to test henna should also be reassuring (skin cell health was not compromised after a 48-hour application of henna). If dying your hair is important to you, it seems clear that henna is inherently safer than these dyes, given its incredibly long history of use. But research into all hair colouring while pregnant is shockingly low (you can see some of the risks associated with the use of synthetic hair dyes during and before pregnancy in Chapter 7 of True Colours: Hair Colouring for the Curious and the Cautious). Many ancient customs that involve direct skin painting of a mother-to-be with henna during late pregnancy are still popular today. Henna’s incredibly long use gives it good safety credentials, and a lot of women choose to use it during pregnancy as a safer alternative to synthetic dyes.
